NETWORKING IN THE LEGAL INDUSTRY

We have all heard the old adage; “don’t burn your bridges behind you”. The legal industry, being a very small and tight-knit community, is no exception to this rule.

Maintaining a very professional reputation is necessary at all times in your career. Whether you are leaving your current firm or joining a new one, it is important to remember that your actions and reputation will follow you wherever you go. When you are interviewing for a potential job be aware of how much information you disclose about your previous employer, as confidentiality is seen as a form of integrity within the industry. Also consider that even if you may not want to accept a particular job right now, you may want to work for that same firm in the future. The point is, you never know whom you may come across again. So put yourself in the best possible light by being respectful, honest and ethical at all times. This will ensure that industry gossip does not get in the way of your impeccable qualifications.

In an industry where everyone knows each other, people talk. How do you want your name to be known?
