3 Simple ways to Use Facebook For Your Job Search

facebook job searchEveryone talks about how to optimize your LinkedIn profile for job searching, but, have you considered how to use your Facebook profile to land your dream job? With over 1.15 billion users to date and 669 million daily active users, Facebook is quickly becoming the place to be for professional, and social, networking.

Here are three easy ways to use your Facebook profile for your job search:

1.  Add a professional skills section to your Facebook profile. Facebook is looking to get a piece of the business networking pie by adding a professional skills section to the “About” section. All you need to do is click “About”, click the “Edit” button on the Work and Experience section and then start adding skills.

2. Look up the company you’d like to work for on Facebook and see if they have a professional Facebook page and “Like” it. They will most likely post job listings, talk about their company culture and ask questions relating to their industry to engage their Facebook community. Get involved by posting comments and/or questions.  Are you familiar with the hiring manager at your dream job? Perhaps you can also look them up on Facebook and see if you have any mutual friends and ask for an introduction. Lastly, you should also consider using Facebook’s graph search for supercharged searching.

3. Consider posting status updates including your current job situation and what you’re looking for. Your Facebook network is most likely made up of friends, family, old colleagues and other acquaintances that might be able to help you out.  On the flip side, be cautious about your privacy settings as you don’t want to start posting about the new job you want if you’re connected to current colleagues.

Many people wonder if it’s possible to use Facebook for their career search, and the answer is a definite yes. Just remember to be careful if you’re going to use Facebook for professional networking.  Don’t share anything you wouldn’t mind your grandmother seeing!
