How to Take the Perfect Profile Picture for LinkedIn

How to Take the Perfect Profile Picture for LinkedIn

how to take the perfect LinkedIn photoThere are lots of detailed (and overly complicated) guides on how to create the perfect profile picture for LinkedIn, but really, the simplest and most obvious thing to do is to use your common sense.

Dress Properly

LinkedIn is the professional social network, which means you need to keep it clean and professional. Your image should depict you in a manner appropriate for your industry.  Stay away from white clothing as it can make you appear washed out. Choose basic colors such as brown, blue, grey and/or black. You should also keep everything modest. We’ve previously written about what to wear for job interviews and the same rules apply.

Keep it Simple

Your LinkedIn profile picture should be simple which means it should only be of you. Save the pets, children and objects for Facebook and Twitter. You should also avoid busy backgrounds. A heavy pattern will take the focus away from your beautiful face.

Use a Headshot

Because LinkedIn profile pictures are square, your photo should be of only your head, neck, and a bit of your shoulders.  If you include a rectangular shot, your head might get cropped out.  Remember, you can upload JPG, GIF or PNG files and the max photo size is 4MB. The ideal pixel size for your image is between 200 x 200  to 500 x 500.

Be Consistent

If you have multiple social networks, it’s a good idea to use the same picture across the board. If you are developing a professional online brand, consistency is key.  For example, if you use different pictures for Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and your Website, it could confuse online viewers. You’d be surprised how many hiring managers look at social media.

This simple blog post was meant to inspire you to create the perfect LinkedIn personal profile picture. It may seem time consuming but being consistent, using a picture with the right dimensions and dressing appropriately are all easy ways to create a great professional image.

You’d be surprised how many people have the same name as you do. Having the same picture across the board makes it really helpful for people to ensure they’ve found the right person.
I’d also like to mention that it’s important to ensure your professional pictures are more mature than your personal ones. It’s ok to have a selfie on your personal Facebook, but it looks sloppy on LinkedIn. Unless there’s the odd chance that your so great at taking selfies that it looks like a headshot. Props to you if you are!
