How Can You Market Your Biggest Job Search Asset?

How Can You Market Your Biggest Job Search Asset?

More often than not, the key to getting your dream job is marketing your self effectively and developing a strong personal brand. When it comes to job searching, a brand that portrays you as an expert in your field and helps you stand out from your competition is and invaluable asset.

Marketing yourself isn’t always easy. In fact, it’s hard to be objective and fair when you’re so close to the issue, but if you use these tips you may help promote yourself more successfully and get the job you want.

  1. Determine and capitalize on your marketing assets. What’s your number one asset? Yourself. You are the “product” that you’re going to be marketing and it’s important that you have a good idea of your “features.” In other words, make sure that you know exactly what your skills, experience and best characteristics are and be ready to speak to them. Those are your selling features, and if you don’t have a good idea of what they are, you’re going to have a hard time promoting yourself to potential employers.
  2. Do your market research. Do you know what the job market is like in your chosen industry? If not, it’s time to do your research. The better you understand the areas where you’ll be promoting yourself, the better the chances that you’ll be able to compete effectively.
  3. Optimize your promotional tools. When branding yourself your most important promotional tools are those that help emphasize our value to a potential employer. Your resume, cover letter, references and referrals are all marketing tools that can help sell you to a firm.
  4. Determine your most effective marketing channels. Where are employers in your industry looking for new hires? It doesn’t matter how effectively you market yourself if potential employers don’t find you. Do a little bit of research to determine where you should be marketing yourself (whether it’s on the web, through a recruiter or a job search website) and make sure that you can be found.
  5. Develop a marketing plan. Having a plan in place, following it and stopping everyone once and awhile to evaluate your success can help make your career goals a reality. A strong marketing plan should answer the following questions:
    • What are your major accomplishments and how would they benefit a future employer?
    • Where do you want your career to go?
    • How do you plan on getting there?
    • How are you going to measure your success?

Finding a new job isn’t an easy task. The job market is a competitive space, but, if you have a good idea of how to market yourself effectively to future employers you can help increase your chances of finding your dream job.
